I'm a very quiet person and get shy sometimes but I don't want others to think I'm mean, stuck-up or disinterested. I want to be friendly towards others but I don't know if I'm succeeding. What types of things can I do to let others realize that I'm just shy and not unfriendly?

Smile. Try little compliments in passing like "I like your shirt" & keep walking so you don't get all spun out. I found that if I had a front like selling tickets or something it gave me a reason to approach people. Eventually little conversations would happen, so that opened some doors for me....well thats how I met my partner.
