Because you were fortunate to be alive as you committed the felony against an unarmed liberal as apposed to a legally armed member of the NRA, in which case you might have been going to the morgue instead, saving the US tax payers untold hundreds and thousands of dollars and lessening the overcrowded prison system. Upon hearing the news others might be forced to ask themselves the hard question, "Am I feeling lucky today"? before they opt for the life of crime.

The term is "institutionalized."

When in prison, they pretty much have zero responsibility - they eat at specific times, get up on cue, and so on.
This daily routine becomes the norm. They do not know how to adjust to their life outside of this structured existance.
