Both my son and daughter were four months old when they started sitting unassisted.
Now would be a good time to start keeping cords and other things within grabbing reach into check. It won't be long before you turn your back for a split second, and turn back to find that your baby has unplugged your router and is cutting her new teeth on it.

I think 6months is when my sons could sit on their own without help. Pulling to a sitting position...I don't remember...I guess I'm more proud that my first son is first chair trumpet and that my second son is a blooming author and my third son is well on his way to being the next Calvin Klein model!
I know these are big moments for you, but they will seem so minuscule once your child actually achieves something out of the ordinary.

All babies, children etc grow and do things differently. Some early like a previous writer at 4 months. Some at 8. It varies as much as the child does. Don't worry about setting goals for those things for your baby. He/ She has a time log going on themselves. If you feel she is slow or too fast talk to your Pediatrician.

My boy was exactly 6 months old when he could sit alone, but he only started to sit himself up when he was 9 months old and better at crawling.

My son started attempting it at 3 months [he as a cousin 2 months older than him who could so it and it made him mad] He would be lying down and he would just try. He finally could sit unassisted right before his 5 month birthday, but could sit himself up to a sittign postion recently [he just turned 7 months]

i have twins and one of them was sitting at six months the other is not but she is stronger and they are seven months now but she is more stubborn. so every baby is different and some will skip some of the important things like crawling or sitting up etc. but congrats on your baby for sitting up today. it is so exciting to me at least whenever they do anything new so have fun because it goes by quickly you know.
