School put me in the alternate program, since I've always had bad attendance. It was ok at first, but now I can't stand sitting alone in a cubical with a book and paper all day. It's so isolating, and boring. I've talked alot at lengths to the teachers, and they won't do anything.

I have a learning disablity, and untreated ADD and the school does nothing to help with that. They know I have it. I've been trying to get them to put me on half days, but my dad won't agree to it. I've already missed all the days i'm allowed to miss (on contract with the school) and I haven't gone to school in 5 days. So I'm 5 days over the limit.

I want to drop schoo so badly. If I already don't get kicked out when I go back tomorrow. I have enough credits to get a secondary school certificate, and I know eventually I will go back and finish, or get my GED. I just got promoted to manager at work, steady job and I'm almost 18.

How do I convince my dad that that this is a good idea?

I have nonverbal learning disorder, it's a form of autism. I want to go to school part time, but my dad won't let me.

Ironically, the drop out age is 16 but to make any other decisions about your education you have to be 18.

Tough it out a few more months. You are already old enough to quit school legally. When you turn 18, you will be able to leave home. You don't say what kind of managerial job you have but is it enough to cover a room of your own or will you need to get a roommate or two?

My daughter who is familiar with ADD, ADHD and Autism through a family friend recognizes that to do well in school you need assistance but she says, and you sound like, you could make it on your own outside school.

People who don't get a basic high school education stand to lose over $1,000,000 in earnings in their lifetimes. Care to let a cool million slip away?

People who get their BAs earn that million dollars and another million or so on top of that during their lifetimes. The further up you go in education, the more you can earn. You can also earn a lot being trained for a trade, like a plumber or air condition repair.

No it's not a good idea to drop out of school. It is good that you have a job and all, but you won't get anywhere in life if you don't have a high school diploma and probably at least a bachelor's degree too.

I'd say suck it up and deal with the fact that you have a less-than-ideal situation. Just get through it. A lot of people your age are chomping at the bit to just GET DONE and get on with their lives. I'd urge you to think hard about what you really want to do, because the value of education is greater than you know right now.

Good luck. Cheers, K

You need to stay in school...most people who drop out never get their GED even though they mean to.

It's great that you got promoted at work....it shows that you have what it takes...and that your manager and company believe in you.

You know you have ADD, and a learning disability....the school has given you the opportunity to take advantage of an alternate program and you whine because it is boring? Do you whine at work about a boring or messy job? I'm guessing not or you wouldn't have gotten the promotion. Quit looking for ways out and look for a way to be as successful with the program you are in at school as you are trying to be at work. A diploma will only help you...and you will learn a valuable lesson from finishing. You may not see it now, but it will be there. You should be almost done...don't quit right before the finish line!!

I think they might be trying to make a point. There are kids at your school, probably in your classes, that want an education so much that they are willing to be on time, pay attention, do homework, hand assignments in on time, avail themselves of tutoring if they are struggling, and don't whine about school/homework/learning interfering with their lives. Especially in California. You say you want to receive an education. Ummmm, there are kids out there who would just about kill to GET an education. Receiving an education implies that you sit back and it is brought to you. You THINK you have a D or an F? Bite me. You know what you put into the class and what you deserve as a grade. It's true that in this country, education is a right. You, however, prove the exception to the rule. Did more than one third of the class get D's or F's....is the teacher profoundly impaired at teaching? But/and, if the teacher is....than you should have gone for tutoring. If you are going to fail classes, than why should your parents blindly and unendingly support you in your laziness and deception. IF YOU HAD TOLD THEM YOU WERE STRUGGLING AND/OR SINCE YOU KNEW YOU WERE STRUGGLING....YOU SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR HELP. AND I'LL BET YOUR COLLEGE TUITION THAT YOUR FOLKS WOULD HAVE HELPED. It is stunning to me that you think it's your right to receive an education even though you didn't participate in getting it. There are millions of other people across the planet that would jump at a chance to go to school and work to learn what is taught. Is it LEGAL???? How about....is it moral that you should get the privilege and waste everyone''s time?

I hope you let your Dad know how you have been feeling at school. Maybe the answer is to do school part time (evenings in an adult ed environment) and continue with your job. If your Dad knows that you are not totally giving up on school he might be a little more understanding.

You know in your heart that you might convince your Dad not to be too angry if you quit but you are not going to get him to think its a good idea. I mean its good that you have a job and congrats on your promotion but eventually you will want more and will more be available to you then without education?

YOU WANT THE TRUTH.

HIGH SCHOOL DROP OUTS ARE FAR MORE LIKELY TO BE SPENDING TIME IN "ISOLATION"CELLS AND SEGREGATION IN PRIOSN AND JAILS FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES,
THEY CAN'T MAKE IT. JOBS ARE MENIAL,
NO PAY AND LOW PAY..
LOSER LABELS....
ITS TOUGH---TWO YEARS TO GRADUATE HS SCHOOL LEFT FOR YOU PROB-- OR A LIFE OF DOWN AND OUT OUT FACING YOU..
YOU CAN'T AND WON'T HANDLE IT....AND ANY KIDS YOU HAVE --STRIKE THREE BEFORE THEY ARE BORN....

YOU REALLY NEED TO FACE THE COLD HARD FACTS--HS IS A SNAP...PRISON IS COLD STARK HARD TIME......AND
DROPOUTS DROP IN TO TROUBLE....

I KNOW YOU THINK YOU ARE DIFFERENT--
YOU CAN BE---
WITH SOME SMARTS====
YOU CAN'T HACK IT IN SCHOOLS-
YOU CAN'T HACK IT ON $5.50 AN HOUR MOPPING FLOORS.
