i will be heading to KL in dec with my friends, we would like to make a sidetrip to the beach, probably to dive and to chill. As we will be in KL for 6 days, the beach should preferably not too far away.

The closest beaches to KL are the worse. But if you still want to go there, it is about 50km, which is the Selangor coast. You can also go to Port Dickson, about 100 km away from KL. But if you want a decent beach, drive 250 km, to Teluk Cempedak in Pahang.

The good beaches and Islands are really far away from KL.

there are no nice beaches near KL, the better one[good for diving] are quite a distance away, like Pangkor Island[3 hours drive] n Langkawi[7 hours drive] as these are the only limited choices at this time of the year[year end monsoon season], because all those much stunningly beautiful islands are located at the east coast n would not be assessable by now til next year end Feb ! Sorry, you come at the wrong time to dive !

Since you have 6 days then Langkawi should be your ideal destination. Transportation wise you have bus/coach, train or rent a car to choose from. Once you are there[Langkawi], rent a car[about RM100 to 150] to move around so that you can covered all the attraction/interesting places, those you shouldn't miss are [1] cable car ride for the thrills [2] Payar Island for diving [3] shopping, its a duty free island !

3 days should be enough for Langkawi, so on you way back to KL do stop at Penang, its a wonderful island for sightseeing, shopping[again] n chill, especially if you do come during X'mas ! you n friends would love it for sure !

Happy Holiday ! n welcome to Malaysia !

The nearest beach is Port Dickson, about one hour drive from KL.
Pulau Pangkor, Perak would be nicer - further up North. Drive to Lumut, Perak then take a ferry to Pulau Pangkor.
If you don't mind man made beach, Sunway Lagoon Water Park or Mines Resort in Sri Kembangan, Selangor. Can swim and enjoy water sport.
