-Keep track of your opponent's resources. Those resources being: their life points, cards in their hand, their spell/trap zone, their monster zone, and their graveyard.
-Have no more than 4 tribute monsters(this excludes Cyber Dragons). Especially if you have monsters with 7 or more stars.
-Take advantage of every phase of your turn and your opponent's turn. If you can do something during your opponent's Main Phase, do it.
-Focus your deck on a theme. A theme doesn't have to be a type of monster. It can be something like doing direct damage or returning monsters to your opponents hand.
-Make investments and get cards you see in winning decks. Stop dreaming about having a Mirror Force and get one for yourself!!
-Read the Advanced Gameplay FAQ. It has drastically changed the way Yu-Gi-Oh is played because it eliminates the annoying gray areas of certain card interactions. Here's a link http://www.upperdeckentertainment.com/yugioh/en/gameplay/faqs/advancedgameplay/default.aspx
-Know what a card does BEFORE putting it in your deck. Go to http://www.netrep.net to see if there are any rulings regarding a card you want to use. NetRep is also handy for settling any dispute you have with someone about what their card actually does.

Here are some suggested card that can win you duels:
Jinzo - Can't allow to activate trap cards
Cyber Dragon - If you have no monsters but your opponent does, you can Speciall summon it.
Skelengel - It's Flip effect allows you to draw one card
Spirit Reaper - Can't be destroyed in battle
Lightning Vortex - Destroys face-up monsters of your opponent
Pot of Avarice - Choose 5 cards in your graveyard, put them in your deck, shuffle, then draw 2 from your deck
Swords of Revealing Light - Stops your opponent for three turns
Brain Control, and Creature Swap - best cards to take an opponent's monster
Premature Burial - Brings back one of your monsters
Trap Hole - Trap cards that destroy a monster summoned by your opponent
Sakuretsu Armor - Destroys opponent's one attacking monster
Call of the Haunted - brings back one of your monsters
The trick is to pay attention during your duels, activate cards properly to stop you opponent, and do the best to win with high ATK monsters.

I would put either final countdown, exodia,
or destiny board f, spirit message i,spirit message n,spirit message a, and spirit message l in my deck to ensure complete victory, that way if you don't have exodia you will have two other ways to win.
