Except for a few periods in the history of our nation, we HAVE had socialism here. In our republic, where we hope to allow the pursuit of happiness to go unfettered by means of laissez-faire capitalism, we deny that same pursuit of happiness to most of the working class. The endless amassment of wealth for wealth's sake that results from laissez-faire capitalism, as well as the ever-increasing striving for efficiency that naturally leads to the outsourcing and exporting of jobs to contractors and nations where labor can be had more cheaply eliminate the prospect of well-paying work for Americans. This leads to phenomena such as the decline of the middle class. What the plutocrats seem to have overlooked is that Americans control America, and the plutocrats don't. Do we need socialism here? I am almost inclined to say that a little more socialism would go a long way toward preventing complete anarchy. If we say, "In order to do business in our country, you are going to have to respect the People who are allowing you to do so, and you are going to have to accept that there will be costs associated with maintaining the powerful military that protects your interests, and the infrastructure you use to transport your goods, and the population that performs your work. If that doesn't suit you, please leave and do not do business here, as you have already seen fit to do away with the American jobs, and most of the population is (or should be) questioning what advantage 'We The People' are supposed to be enjoying by having you do business in OUR COUNTRY."
So, if by "socialism," you mean the idea that there should be redistribution of wealth from the obscenely wealthy into social programs that benefit the most miserable persons, where the declining middle class (which is the only thing standing between people who have too much and people with nothing to lose) don't have to get tax increases they can not afford, but where it's still okay to be wealthy and pursue wealth... then YES. We need some socialism.
We don't need pure socialism any more than we need pure capitalism. We definitely need more socialism than we have had recently. Nations more socialist than ours (but not purely socialist, EGADS!) seem to have the following characteristics:
There is a robust middle class.
There are people who are poor, but not desperate.
There are people are are rich, but not obscenely rich or rich enough to buy countries (or governments, for that matter.)
They are not hostages to capital interests.

Not communism or laissez-faire capitalism either and also no system headed up by a non-elected government. Socialism is about the best thing going. I define socialism as a kind of regulated capitalism where the greed part of it is kept in check for the common good.Greedy people always prefer laissez-faire capitalism.

No. We live in a quasi-democracy. More an Oligarchy than a democracy but this country was founded on the principles of a democratic free society, socialism would be swatted down like a fly on a hot summer day. I kinda don't like the idea of having my hard earned money thrown around because some don't want to earn their own way.

Well there are pros (and cons) for both - but show me an example where socialism has worked, or communism, for the good of the people in the long term

Do you like to make as much money as you can? In communist and socialist governments, you'll only be able to make as much as the government lets you.

Do you like to keep your money and not give to much to taxes?
You would be taxed to death and your taxes would go to more social programs for those who choose not to work.

Do you like the freedom to shop around for values? In a socialist and communist society, there's no "supply/demand" that allows for different prices of goods and services.

Do you want the government to only allow to you own 2 luxury items (this could include a washer and dryer and microwave, or TV and Car)?

how are you able to declare it is optimal freedom? to declare that socialism represents optimal freedom it could require an entire breakdown and redefining of the two the term socialism, or freedom. i do no longer evaluate it freedom being forced to artwork a role that I hate, which might rob me of my abilities and inventive know-how. i do no longer evaluate it freedom while i'm no longer unfastened to pursue my very own pastimes. i do no longer evaluate it freedom while a huge ingredient of my earnings is confiscated via the government and given to those who have not worked as no longer effortless as I surely have, or have the talents that I surely have. Socialism deprives freedom from the guy. in case you have lots self assurance in socialism, why are you no longer residing in Europe or someplace? you be attentive to, it extremely kills the arguments of those form of people who compliment socialism mutually as residing in a unfastened usa. If i myself theory that each little thing in American replaced into so unfair and vicious, and if i myself theory socialism replaced into the respond, it does not take me long to purchase a airplane value ticket and flow to a socialist usa. If it is so super, why are not you residing in a sort of international places? no person is conserving you right here contained in america, or forcing you to stay right here against your will. depend of actuality, i will make a manage you. i'm a Pilot and that i visit fly you out of this usa for unfastened, no strings linked, and land you in any socialist usa of your determination. properly, there is one string linked, you ought to promise to under no circumstances stay interior the U.S. returned. additionally, i will furnish an identical centers on your socialist acquaintances. unfastened, one-way flight to any socialist usa of your want. i could be lots much less complicated which you will merely flow to any socialist usa and be lots quicker than attempting to transform this usa by way of fact maximum individuals are against socialism and we are no longer likely to enable anybody exchange this usa, and additionally you could additionally make the hire on that one!
