People get so comfortable with their lifestyles that they don't stop to think about the reprocutions of what they do. For instance, an alcoholic will not stop drinking because it's become a way of life for him or her even though every drink they consume is killing them slowly. Usually, people won't change until something drastic happens because they need that wake up call to get them out of the lull they've been in all their lives. Its sad, but at least not everyone is like that. And we can only hope that more and more people realize that they are not invinsible and they can become addicted or fall victim to a certain lifestyle. It seems to be high hopes for such a "free" society we live in today, but I pray everyday that someday, things will change for the better.

It's called being complacent, which is very typical behavior for most of us. Unless something drastic changes in our lives, we tend to take things for granted. Example: Periodic chest pains may be "somewhat bothersome" until the heart attack comes. Then and only then will a person decide to make some necessary lifestyle changes.

Some alcoholics can loose everything they have and keep on drinking until they drop dead. Some smokers will keep smoking even though they loose a lung, until their dead. Some drug users will destroy their families, steal, etc. and keep going until their dead.
So I don't think it takes something drastic to happen for someone to change their life. They just finally decided it was time to do it.
