Clearly the U.S. is in a struggle now, and so we need our strength. The question is if things like the first and fourth ammendments (as well as the others) are liabilites we can only afford when things are going well, or if they are strengths that can help us even when things are difficult?

Actually, they don't make us either stronger or weaker.

The rights they represent exist, with or without the amendments themselves. The fact that the Constitution, which creates the federal government, recognizes their existence, merely defines us and our relationship with our government.

They don't make us anything at all that we aren't already.

The fact that some find them negotiable, now that might make us weaker, or at least something else.

The 1st amendment has never been an absolute. You can't (despite some Lib claims to the contrary) yell fire in a crowded theater.
The Constitution provides for the suspension of Habeas Corpus under some circumstances. Lincoln invoked 1 of these circumstances during the Civil War saying "The Constitution is not a suicide pact".

Depends on how complacent we are! If we think the bad violent guy will not attack us because of our constitution it weakens US. While If we become more vigilant to protect what we have the luxury afforded by it; we are stronger. Like most items of value it is a double edged sword.

In most instances, they make us stronger. However, in these difficult and terroristic times, the Constitution doesn't allow for any "gray" areas, and that could allow for certain weaknesses.

The misuse of rights is what makes us weaker.
