As a officer I can't reemmber ever paying for coffee and normally free donuts at the donut shops.
We got 1/2 meals at Burger King, McDonalds, Waffle House, and alot of other places.
They like the police officers to be around, it provides them safey, esp corner markets at night.
I can remember after I retired, I had not been back to the area where I used to be a officer for a couple months, I went in to see one of the clerks and manger at a corner store that I used to go to every night. I went to get my coffee and the clerk was not there, I started to walk out and forgot to pay, I felt so silly.
But the manager was there and told me that I had free coffee there for as long as she worked there, since she knew that even retired, I would stop something if anything was going on there had I been in.
Every job has varoius perks this is just one for officers

A lot of cities have outlawed this practice, but to be honest I don't see anything wrong with giving a cop a cup of coffee. It sure makes a robber think twice if he knows that the police could be showing up any minute for some free coffee.
What is wrong is if it is given with the understanding that the officer will give the business preferential treatment. Or if the officer somehow implies that establishments that give him free stuff will be given preferential traetment. That's wrong because it starts to slide over into the bribe category.

some jurisdictions do not allow it at all. then, if the agency has made such a rule for all their govt employees, they would be in violation.
others do.
most police put themselves at great risk for less than the average salary.
and a business person who is kind to a cop wont be worried while there is police presence there. many persons get freebies out of kindness.
who's nice to who shouldn't be something of concern. if they were giving them booze or big gifts or favors to elected officials that could be an issue.
a meal or coffee is such a small kindness and i doubt it would cause corruption.
worry about the big things.

No they are wrong. What they are refering to is having a police officer be there for protection for a long period of time. Then you will have to hire them. All you have to do is call the department and ask for more walk throughs. Once they do a few walk throughs and you offer them coffee, they will continue to come back.

Cops get free coffee for their presence mostly. Some businesses give coffee for free out of appreciation, most places do give the cop the staff discount.
here in canada they are paid good, great benefits, and mostly respected next to the criminals its a pretty good job :)

It is a tough one. Technically, if the store people offer the officer free or reduced price product they are offering the officer a bribe. If the officer accepts, then the officer has accepted a bribe and finally, if the officer implies or states that s/he should get a freebie or price reduction it is asking for a bribe. All of which are unethical and criminal but it happens.
I'm glad I'm not a police officer because I don't know how I would handle the situation since it would impact my fellow officers as well.

The donut shop is "safe" as long as the police are sitting around there .. they don't get stuff for free .. it is offered to them for free. Whether the police should legally take it while on the job or not is another story. Good Luck ! :)

I worked in many restaurants and convience stores and most of the things they get they have to pay for, however whats the big squabble over coffee?A measly cup of coffee is not like getting welfare or free social programs is it??????Thats the least they deserve..,a freaking cup of coffee, how petty.

I really don't think they get it for "free" they do a hard job watching our neighborhood and as far as I Know a lot of places offer discounts to people with uniform. (Doctors, firefighters, police, paramedics etc) so it is up to the place to offer a discount or give it for free.
If a would have a coffe shop o donout place for sure I'd offer it for free; it's my way to say thanks to our heroes.
