Do you remember gozinta? How many times this number gozinta that number? Then you figure out the remainder. Work left to right.

We need an example:

What is 1207 divided by 4?

Work on the larger number from left to right:

1 is less than 4, go to 12.

4 goes into 12 three times exactly, no remainder

0 is less than 4, so put 0 next to the 4 = 40

the last number is 7. 4 goes into 7 once, with 3 left over, called the remainder.

So the answer is 401 remainder 3.

Another way to express the remainder is to put it over the number you are using to divide, 4.

So this answer is 401 3/4.

for example:
1242 divided by 9
9 does not go into 1, so you move on.
9 goes into 12 once, so you put 1 as the first number in the answer.
you bring down the 4, 9 goes into 34 3 times, so the second number in you answer is 3.
you bring down the 2 and 9 goes into 72 8 times.
when you put 8 after the 1 and the 3 your final answer is 138.

You simply divide one number by another. For example, five goes into 25, five times. That's simple division. Long division is more complicated. It's hard to give you an example here because I don't have the symbols.
