Im 33wks pregnant and still drinking some caffeine. I have just seriously cut down on it. My doctor did say it was ok in small amounts. I currently drink 1 normal strength coffee per day and the rest decaffeinated. I try to stay away from caffeine based softdrink and drink lemonade or orange crushes and tea does have caffeine, but in smaller amounts than coffee.
Chocolate also contains caffeine, but ive never really been a huge choc eater so thats ok. There are alot of products that do have some form of caffeine in it. If you dont know then check the label on the side.
Many different women and doctor's have opinions about the caffeine debate. I have friends, family and ppl that i have met in the passed that have never cut out any caffeine and their baby has been fine. It does depend on each individual woman and how much of this her placenta is absorbing. There is scientific proof to say that caffeine in large doses can cause underweight babies and prem birth. But if consumed in moderation its usually ok.
The reason some doctor's will tell you to actually stay away from it is because there has been no recommended guideline as to how much u can actually have before it becomes unsafe. So, if you dont feel comfortable with consuming it always check with the product. If that doesnt tell you and you are still not sure call the product's hotline and ask them. They can send you the list of additives if any.
Good Luck and Congratulations

Too much caffeine can cause the baby to have neural defects. Read the ingredients to determine if something has caffeine in it. Some hot cocoa mixes have caffeine, some don't, but a lot of cocoa mixes have lots of other chemicals and preservatives that you don't want to have in your system anyway. Find a health food store and buy all-natural hot cocoa mix. Sodas that contain aspartame aren't good either, and besides, they're full of sugar. Drink water or fruit juice instead.
Everything in moderation - one cup of coffee or tea in a day won't hurt much.

It is okay to drink caffeine, just in moderation, two or three cups of soda, coffee, tea, hot cocoa is okay. I am not sure what it does to the baby, but it is just not reccommended to have a lot.
Yes, cocoa has caffeine. And if it says "caffeine free," then it is.

I'm not sure about the caffeine affects on babies but hot cocoa does have caffeine in it. You can however buy white hot chorcolate that doesn't contain caffeine. It's a little more expensive but well worth it. I think it's better than regular hot chocolate.

Caffeine-free/decaffeinated beverages are fine during pregnancy. The amount of caffeine in cocoa and chocolate is negligible, so they are also fine during pregnancy. If you find you really must have caffeine, the FDA suggests you limit your intake to 1-1/2 servings per day.
Too much caffeine is believed to put you at greater risk for miscarriage, premature birth and low birth-weight. In addition, it speeds up the fetus's heart rate, which can be dangerous. And it reduces your body's fluid level, which can cause you to be dehydrated - very dangerous for a pregnant woman.
As with everything, moderation is the key.

I have read in a baby magazine that I just got a doctor wrote an article about it and said no more than 300mg of caffeine a day. It can dehydrate a woman which is not good because you need lots of water in your system. If you are drinking caffeine free I am sure that is ok just try and drink lots of water, 100% juice, and milk.

They say that you should avoid caffiene.. but having some is ok. 300mg approx. a day is the reccomended cut off before it's supposed to be risky. But I know people who have had tons of caffiene and had perfectly healthy babies. It's just a precaution. And yes hot cocoa mix does have caffiene.. all real chocolate (i.e. not white chocolate or things with artifical chocolate flavour) have caffiene in them. Caffiene free sodas are ok, although the sugar content in them is still high, and I know you can get regular teas decaf (the one that I drink only has 5mg of caffiene)... I haven't seen any non-herbal tea that is completely caffiene free.. And be careful to read the ingredients if you are drinking herbal teas, some have certain herbs in them that are not recommended to be consumed during pregnancy. Good luck!

I was told by my doctor to not drink diet pop. but decaf coffee is OK. Hot chocolate any chocolate bars all have caffeine in them. I don't know what the caffeine does to babies however when I was 30 weeks my doctor told me no more junk for fear that I had gestational diabetes. If you over eat junk you have a greater risk of developing it. No more than two caffeine drinks daily

I think the caffeine thing has changed in the past few years. When I was pregnant it was something you shouldn't take a chance on, even though there was no real proof that it caused miscarriages, neural tube defects, etc. I have friends who have been pregnant in the past year and all of them said caffeine was not banned by the doctor, but just a limited consumption/moderation recommendation.
