The North had mostly factories, which hired out white people, many of which were women. There really wasn't a need for slaves.
The South thrived on cotton, tobacco, and other crops. Therefore, with large plantations, there was a great need for slaves.
The majority of the Southern population were not slaveholders. However, they were for slavery. They all wanted slaves, someday. Some were against it, but most were not.
When Lincoln was elected, they thought that he would take away their slaves. In reality, he just did not want to spread it. So, South Carolina secceeded, and many more followed. I believe that 11 total states made up the Confederate States of America.
The South wasn't really fighting for slavery. They were fighting to leave the Union. The North did not want them to, thus, the Civil War began.
If you think about it, though, the Civil War truly was about slavery.
So, when talking about the Civil War, you'll hear many different names used. There are rebels, conferderates, and South used for the Southern states. There's union and North mostly used for the Northern states. The northern states were the United States of America; the southern states were the Confederate states of America.

In the South most of the workers in plan
tations, farms, household, like cookers, nannys, housekeepers, cleaners, were slaves, that was the reason to the war, the rich landowners from the South wanted slavery because they had free labor and slaves were a big part of their fortune.

Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation which made it illegal to own slaves in the United States. The southern states didn't want to give them up so they seceded from the union meaning they proclaimed themselves a separate country. They called themselves the Confederate States of America. Lincoln must have foreseen the great things in which the United States was capable and sent the army south to get it back.

Both sides had slavery, it wasn't formally abolished until the 13th Amendment was ratified by all the states - Kentucky didn't do so until 8 months after the war ended

The yankees was up North and they were against slavery because they have factories and wanted to free the slaves to work for slave wages in their factorys. So they were not all heart.
The Rebells of the South had slaves and they worked the farms and plantations. They also wanted to be seperate countries like Europe and make their own rules. Which you can see how well it has worked for Europe we can be very glad they lost the war.

The South's economy relied very heavily on slave labor. That's probably the main reason they were so reluctant to see it end.
