I just want to know what determines who gets selected, because I noticed that Nancy Pelosi was automatically the Speaker after the Democrats took the majority, yet no meeting has taken place. What is the decision based on?

She's not automatically the Speaker. SHe is currently the minority leader, which makes her a clear choice to be elected once the Congress meets in January. It is unlikely that they will choose anyone else.

There is a vote taken of all House members, and whoever gets the most votes becomes Speaker.

In practice, there are actually two sets of votes: the first is done within each party to pick their candidate to nominate, then the second is the official floor vote. Members of each party have, of course, agreed to vote for their candidate rather than that of the other party, so the actual floor vote is simply a formality.

She is nomitated and elected to the position by her peers (fellow democrats).

Also, she is likely to be the speaker when the new session of Cogress takes effect in January. Right now, those who were incumbent as of tuesday will remain in power until the official start of the new congress.
