Alcohol, stupitdity, and worse of all, thinking they know they can handle it, when they are really nowheres near the maturity level needed. Aslo some teens sadly dont know the whole truth about pregnancy untill it is far to late. I think they should teach sex ed in the 6th grade, instead of intro 7th and advanced 8th.

Nellie, of course teenagers know that having unprotected sex can lead to pregnancy. But you are not in every school and home so how do you know that they are getting the education that they need? I got lucky my mom discussed sex with me at a very young age and my school did a great job with their program. On the other hand, my husband who is 28 had almost no sex-ed. His parents gave him a book to read and his school didn't teach much.
My point is not every parent feels the need or wants to discuss sex with their child, thinking they can learn about it from friends and at school. Other parents pull their kids out of the sex-ed classes and don't teach them anything at home.
Schools on the other hand usually only get funding for the sex-ed programs because they only teach abstinence and so therefore those kids who have the parents mentioned above don't get any real information. Another thing is that some schools have pretty much eliminated their sex-ed classes and say that it should be the parents responsibility to teach kids about it.
So before you assume everybody knows everything about sex do a little research and pay attention to all the questions about sex and pregnancy on these boards. It may actually surprise you how little some people know even in their 30's, 40's, and beyond.

The same as any other pregnancy, "having unprotected sex". Pregnancy is not the worst thing you can get from having unprotected sex so think hard before you do.
For everyone who answered lack of education, get real. Teenagers know that if they have unprotected sex, they could get pregnant. For those who said lack of communication with parents, get real. All parents teach their children that if they have sex they could get pregnant.
The real problem is that everyone thinks it will never happen to them, the same as AIDS. most people think it will never happen to them.
In many cases of teenage pregnancies, it is a way out of their parents homes. I live in a small town and many of the young girls are getting pregnant over and over again because they know that they will get welfare and the more kids they have, the more money they will get (and don't think I am just being cynical, I've heard them say it).
Also I work in a pharmacy and I see girls coming in to get the morning after pill several times a month because they don't want to take the pill and the guys they are will don't want to wear condoms. Get real girls, if you don't want to take the pill and the guy won't wear a condom, tell them if they don't wear a raincoat, they can't play in the rain.
So the reasons for teenage pregnancy is most teens just don't care. Our moral society is going to the dogs.

the responsibility deficit. they fail to think beyond the moment, and dont consider the consequences. just like any teenage behaviour: leaping is more fun if you dont look first.
sometimes the girls do it to keep the guy through some romantic belief that kids make everything work. wrong.
sometimes the guys pressure the girls into allowing the guy to have no condom, as they are only looking a few minutes ahead at the intended orgasm.
teenagers are inherently selfish, and fail at taking a serious notice of the simple signs of common sense.
harsh, but just look at it people. teenagers werent meant to be smart, that comes from experience, and really, you teenagers have only just started to live apart from your mothers womb.

Unprotected teenage sex. Believing that it won't happen to them. Believing that you can't get pregnant the first time you have sex. Lack of knowledge about methods of protection. Fear of being seen in the drug store buying condoms. Lack of knowledge of the mechanics of sex (ex: ejaculation in vagina will cause pregnancy).
Need more?

some dumb gorls do it to spite their parents.
some dumb girls think it would be cool to be a mother and they know welfare will keep them and give them money and their punk boyfriends can live with them and not have to work or go to school
