Because they think if they can make others look bad it makes them look better. Actually they are the ones with the self-esteem problems.

People (and animals too) discriminate about a wide variety of things. Life would be impossible without discrimination. Discrimination is what you do when...
You accept food but refuse to eat poison.
You accept reasonable risks but refuse acts that entail certain death.
You judge people.
More on that last. You must sometimes judge people before you know much about them as individuals. A failure to do so might kill you. You judge people only partly by your experience with them. But mostly, you judge by
1. Where you find them.
2. How they are dressed.
3. How they talk.
4. Their body language.
5. Who they hang out with.
6. Their possessions.
7. The social context in which you find them.
8. Their race.
Each of these grounds for discrimination is reasonable, up to a point. Including race. You're more likely to be correct if your "first approximation" about someone is an assumption that they will think and behave as an average member of his race. That's what stereotypes are: they're distilled averages from the experiences of many people in regard to some other kind of people.
But there's an agenda going on by certain leftist social engineers, who want to mix up every race with other races, so that racial nationalism will be impossible and enable everyone's POLITICAL loyalty to have no rival as his PRIMARY loyalty. Ever have family and government been secret enemies, and always government tries to stamp out the basis for an extended kinfolk allegiance, which is essentially what racism is. That's why racial discrimination has been singled out for special villification from the list of all the factors that people have habitually used for discrimination.

it all comes down to a complete and total lack of education and understanding of other people's culture, nationality, race, sexuality, gender, as well as ignorance. if people are unwilling to come to terms with the concept of difference and in that we are all different but we're still the same species, then that's very sad indeed. some people don't like a certain 'group' because they are different, that they have one particular aspect that marks them out as being different. but that's a problem in itself really, seeing as it seems to me that unfortunately, for some, if you do not conform to the 'norm' then that marks you out to be a human being and a person who should be ridiculed and discriminated against. for instance, the so-called assumption that being any other colour other than white is not the 'norm', being gay, lesbian or bi-sexual rather to be straight/hetrosexual is not the 'norm'. its so awful- yet so old-fashioned.
people who discriminate others are just pathetic, uneducated and a disgrace to mankind. they will always be considered inferior to everyone else unless they change their ways for good and for the better.

Well people are hateful and arrogant. Why do whites think they are better than blacks, and non muslims hate muslims. Why cant the country let Hispanics live here and work, it really all boils down to arrogance. People pick and choose who they associate with, instead of being warm and welcoming to all. I can say that my whold life I have been accepting of everyone. God gave me the gift of compassion, love, understanding and being humble etc... How often do you see someone smile at you on the street. People are to concerned with themselves to care about other people and thier feelings. I say lets all get along, I am not better than anyone else, we are all human.

ya and then you get blamed for not participating right?, ya,same thing happened to me during middle school. It's not so much discrimination its more like kids only communicating with other kids that are "popular", they wouldn't want to seem like a "nerd", Kids are stupid, you just have to understand that and move past it.
