Had a 2.8 with a similar problem it turned out to be the switch under the steering column. There is a rod from the key switch that goes down the steering column and pushes on a switch. The rod becomes worn and doesn't push enough to make contact. That is why others a telling you tilt the column up and down.
I didn't replace it. I ran power from the secondary on the coil to the starter and used the trunk release as as a switch. I would check for where I have power first ....

When you turn the ignition key the ignition switch pushes forward on a rod that runs down inside of your steering column. This rod goes into a slot on a little box that is bolted to the very bottom of the steering column. You might also want to check your neutral switch. On a standard your neutral switch is incorporated with your clutch pedal mechanism. One thing puzzles me . How were you able to run a diagnostic test if you can't get your engine to run? Could be an ignition relay? Good luck.

Reliability should be pretty good but not in the top of the class, I would rather get a Ford Mustang 5.0 over a Pontiac Firebird.

first thing stubby,i would check,is your cables from the battery to the starter, then is it a new starter?if not, then take it out and bench start it,to see if its good, also it could be the ignition switch.just turn the key on(like your going to start it)and have someone take a screwdriver and jump across the terminals on the starter and see if it starts then.iam curious to know how it works.if this helps you or you need advice, just e-mail me.

Next time, hold the key in the "start" position and move the shifter between reverse and drive.
You may have a bad neutral safety switch on the trans.
ADDED:
Hey "Brooster", all you have to do to check for seized engine is rotate it by hand a little.

I agree with the person talking about the fusible resistor going to the starter. You need to trace the 12 volts that should be going to the starter when you turn the key.

if you have a tilt column, try holding key on start and move steering wheel up & down. if car starts, replace switch on column.
