Can't countries like Australia and USA just give them money to build schools, hospitals, houses etc? I know we do, but how come we don't give them enough to get them established and be able to run their own countries without the terrible living conditions. The governments surely could spare a few billion dollars?
How come it doesn't work like that?

They do or they would have died out a long time ago. The problem isn't with getting enough help it is bad government.
The government confiscates the supplies and then sells them to the people until they have no more money and then they basically let them starve. Right now the Islamic peoples from the north Africa have invaded into Sudan and durfur. They won't let food or supplies in there. It is genocide. They drop missles into small villages and kill everyone. They want their land and herds and they take the small children to use as sex slaves until they die. They have no regard for human life that is not in their inner circle. They put them into camps and let them starve by keeping people from bringing them food. They just want them to die and so far it is working. They have killed millions.
Even there programs about feeding the children, the government can't even get in there to feed the children.
All boils down to bad corrupt governments. Along with false religion that allows them to think of others as sub-human.
One part of Africa they went in and built schools, hospitals and they had a rebellion and burnt them all down. Civil war

Part of the reason is that many of the leaders of these Third World countries are corrupt or just plain crazy.

Look at North Korea. If we send them humanitarian aid, it could be diverted elsewhere. Kim Jong-il could use humanitarian aid, such as food, as a bargaining chip to keep control over his own population.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't provide aid, but the solutions are more complex than just handing over money. There are many other practical solutions to help reduce poverty. I don't have the time or space to cover them here, but hopefully your question will prompt others to find out what they are.

We're pretty deep in our own pile of debt as it is, so I doubt the United States or Australia wants to give two or three billion to every impovershed country in the world.

How can there still be poverty in the U.S. or in any other industrialized country. Giving people more doesn't change the underlying attitudes that cause poverty.
