Afraid you bought a "standard lemon", you probably need antoher transmision (I would not rebuild the one you have), - maybe there is something inherintly wrong with it, that might make it go bad again!!

Is your switch for backup lights on transmission, or on column (most are on tans)... this would say that it is "shifting properly", but the transmisson isn't working! So it is not a linkage problem!!

There are way too many options, but all seem to be internal to the trans, Bands, drums, and clutches. Have you tried another dealer, is your check engine light on ?(it will store a code for diagnostics) Sorry

Hopefully it is just the mechanical linkage! Put it on a lift and see if you can shift in in to reverse on the transmission.

the brakes on that wheel are locked or overadjusted. often the self-adjusters launch while backing up. you have gotten a frozen parking brake cable or it must be the the brakes have a mechanical difficulty (broken brake hardware which comprise a spring). you will might desire to get the wheel pulled off to verify what's incorrect earlier you do harm to the brakes and drums

There only one problem
ITS A FORD

typical AL4D tranny
next will be over drive, drive, 2nd then 1st
I suggest getting a new tranny, or a new truck
don't get that one rebuilt
