I've been surfing around yahoo answers for a little while now, and I've noticed that a lot of people seem really closed minded about some topics, especially things like sex and politics.

Now, I know these are really sensitive subjects with everybody, but what disturbs me is that the closed minded people always undoubtedly seem Christian (No, I'm not saying ALL Christians are closed minded)

It just bugs me that whenever they find something they don't agree with, they always make some comment about "I'll pray for you" after they say that the person asking the question needs psychological help.

Am I the only person to notice this?

i see it too and it drives me crazy. i hate how most of the closed minded people seem to b christian, again not all, and how they try to force their ideas on others, especially cuz im an atheist. i dont want to b changed and i wish they would stop trying but then again i see how they r just expressing themselves in their religion.

Why are so may members of mankind so un-accepting, That is a very hard question to answer in a simple manner. But in my point of view many members of mankind have a very hard time accepting themselves, Which make it even harder for them to accept others member of mankind, that think and sees things in a different perspective.. And many of them are seeing mans in-humanity to man for the first time up-close and personnel find it a very hard thing to take. As for most Christian who truly know that they have God in their lives finds that what mankind does to its self totally un-acceptable. When they know that having in God in their lives have made their lives a lot easier to deal with, and they can't seem to understand why is everyone is not dealing with God when they fall into troubled time. That does not make them bad people it just makes them different. And the fact is, when they say I will pray for you, It is a good thing on their part. I am not asking you to do anything you do not wish to , But I am asking you to be a littler more tolerant and understanding when it comes to dealing with people that see things differently from you ok. And remember they are not the enemy they are just people that wish that this world would get better. Have and great day........

No you are not the only one who experiences or notices that Christians are so closed minded--not just christians-but in answer to your question: I am a christian-Not-Christ. I feel-Yes we should want and do pray for those in times of trouble and in times of well being!! And I feel the only judgment there should be is by God-Jesus!! No one has ANY authority tell you
that your BAD or UNPLEASING TO GOD and THEY ARE THE AUTHORITY TO GETTING YOU THE HELP YOU NEED. Of course I believe in praying for those I know are having difficulties in there life. We need to call upon God in good and in bad times. I you "choose" to speak with someone , the only advice you should get from a christian is to: referr you to bible scripture, wish you well and pray with you or pray for you. I don't like the way in which you said a christian typically respond.

I recommend going to God- reading the word of god, but if you feel that is not you at this point-that is okay, but you don't need anyone insinuating that you are worse off than they are--they have to answer to God for the way they are treating you!
GOD LOVE YOU!!!!!!! AND I HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL

The difficulty is that Christian teachings, especially in Southern Baptist churches, take the Bible literally. When you do that, you get a bunch of stock beliefs from church leaders. Look at the link in my source list for a great example of one of the answer mills.

Many of the people you are referring to believe that they have all of the correct answers.

Take care,
Troy

I think that after eons of evolution, we have had to define our boundaries in order to protect ourselves.

I think that the very traits that helped us to survive long enough to evolve to this level of existence are now the least understood and least accepted aspects of our character make-up.

For instance, in many lesser primate groups, it is expected that each group strictly defines its membership, and that being ostracized could be fatal. Perhaps we carry this basic instinct in a more subtle way and it is interpreted as stubbornness, bigotry, et al.

Just a thought. Cheers, and congrats on achieving such a level of empathy.

its hard for people to show their emotions through internet. they just don't know what to say, and they probably don't have the time to type it all down either. but there is always the possibility that they really ARE close minded (no offence). it all depends on who's answering and their level of knowledge towards that subject, that's all

I not only noticed it, I knew people were like this. Most people are dumb, so it's going to take a little while to get a good answer.

Would you rather us Christians to just pray for you but not say that we are? I'd be flattered to have someone pray for my problems, even if I wasn't a Christian.
