Galvanization is a process by which metals are plated with a coating of zinc. It's a form of cathodic corrosion protection. Zinc can be applied by immersing the target object in a molten bath, or by electro-plating.

Galvanising is an outer coating of zinc on the steel nail. There are two ways of galvanising, one is hot dip galvanising where the nail is dipped in a molten bath of zinc. The other method is electrical deposition plating, similar to gold, chrome, or silver plating. The zinc is not an alloy, but a mechanical coating. The coating is used to protect the underlying steel from corrosion using sacrificial corrosion. ie. the zinc corrodes in preference to the steel as it corrodes easier than steel.

Nothing to add... Bill M is completely correct. (Did he say, "No, they're not an alloy"?) It's a coating.
