Top is the guy who inserts, the bottom who is inserted into. Most gays are "versatile" to some extent. Also can refer who is the more dominant person in a relatiosnhip, Top being the Dominant one.

Aside for the physical aspects of tops penetrating, and bottoms receiving, there is a whole other world in addition to the obvious.
People who like role play and leather, for example, have a mental state of being, whereby a Top is dominant and a Bottom is submissive. A Bottom can penetrate a Top IF it's what the Top wants, and he will control it. (Man, that's fun stuff!!!).

Well, depends on the situation. Bottoms can run the show and tops can be submissive. But in general, bottoms prefer being plowed, and tops prefer to plow....no big deal, there has to be one for the other to function, so each has a rightful place in the scheme of things. Most men are either but have a preference, some men can only be one or the other to be pleased. different strokes for different folks. Sadly, tops are too often expected to be the aggressives and bottoms expected to be the submissives..not fare, for the position has nothing to do with the nature of aggression. good luck

the same can be said of the traditional "missionary style" in the heterosexual world.
