I personally think any one would be a total fool if they weren't prepared to be searched in any and all ways while on publically owned property especially in matters pertaining to the safety of others, ie, weapons, explosives or drugs. This includes schools, court houses, parks, and administration buildings. No where in the constition are you quarenteed a right to privacy. You are quarenteed protection from unlawful search and seizure in your home, but not on public property. The locker arguably belongs to the tax payer at large, not to the student to which it has been assigned. It is a storage space on loan.

Hi Irish - Yes, they are good. And in perspective I am an old liberal hippie who in the past would have had a fit about invasion of privacy.
But in the past, we did not have kids bringing guns to school or dealing drugs out of their lockers or building bombs in the basement. And really, who should mind if they are NOT doing anything wrong. I say, good for them. One caveat...NO personal searches without both a male and female teacher or officer BOTH in the room.

Absolutely not. Schools already impose excessive regulations and deny students a lot of freedom. Students have very little control over what happens to them at school. Their lockers are one area that is private and that they can control as they please. Unless there is evidence that something in a student's locker could harm that student or others, I think staff should keep their hands and eyes out of students' lockers.

While random locker searches have repeatedly been deemed legal in courts, I really don't believe there's much need for them. I would tend to favor searches only following just cause.

No - it is just teaching young people to accept an intolerable level of invasion of privacy. Even if you are a child you have a right to certain levels of privacy particularly the privacy of your body. Anything involving physical contact like a personal search should in ordinary circumstances be out of the question.

Yep. Lockers don't belong to students- they are being borrowed from the state. The state has every right to search the lockers. Schools aren't meant to allow students every freedom they would be granted in the "real world." Schools are meant to be a place where students learn. When things impede learning (like, I dunno, crack and guns), they need to be dealt with.

yes. They are needed in fact. Students shouldn't mind if they have nothing to hide...I didn't when I was in high school.
Now that I'm a teacher I think they're absolutely needed. Our administration has found weapons, and drugs.
