I've seen this happen when people install codecs incorrectly. (Such as the K-lite codec pack) But I'm guessing you didn't install anything. I don't know the speaker setup on the Inspiron 6000 but I'm guessing it's like most laptops and only has 2 speakers (my laptop has 4). Sounds like you have setup the computer to support surround sound system on just 2 speakers. Meaning that you are hearing just the surround sound channels and not the main channels. You can check in the windows speaker setting to make sure you are set up for stereo sound (or the notebook setting). Also check your DVD playing software for sound settings. And lastly in audio on the DVD itself (normally on the first menu) Basically you want to make sure you are playing everything in 2.0 sound compatibility instead of 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 which I'm guess it has been set to.

Unfortunately, many sound engineers really screw up the proportions in movies. There are, however, several alternatives you can try.
1 - Change the 'speaker type'
Most DVD playback software decodes the audio tracks differently for stereo, quad, 5.1, 6.1, etc. If using stereo speakers (as is most likely, even if the internal laptop speakers), this will shift the louder portion of the music to non-existent speakers, making the vocal track much easier to hear.
2 - Adjust the playback settings (ie - equalizer)
Many playback programs (such as VideoLan) have built-in equalizers whereby you can shift the volume by frequency band. Most voices are in the 220-2200 Hz range, so you can make them stand out better by increasing the boost in these ranges and lowering the others. Not a perfect solution (as the music you're trying to overcome often uses the same ranges), but an additional measure you can try.

Background music is often much louder than voices. It sounds like this is a volume problem. The volume is not turned up loud enough.
There are two volume controls.
One is the sound card volume which often has a little yellow speaker in your lower right task tray.
The other is in the software program where you are playing the DVD.

I have the exact Dell Laptop as you. I've never came across the situation you are in, but you shouldn't have to pay Dell Technical Support anything. That's Dell Customer Service. If you need help that's there job to help you out for Free. My god. Looks like you are having software problems. I'm not a computer expert, but I wonder if it's the movie itself? Have you tried different movies to see if its the movie itself? If that wasn't it, have you tried using headphones? I wonder if it's your speakers? Hmm ..

I would like to suggest to play the DVD on a regular DVD player and if ever the same problem occurs there may be a problem on the DVD but if not you may need to do some setting while having the DVD played on DELL. Maybe set the Dolby Sound....etc. Good luck.

I am not too sure what is going on but check out ALL you audio setting. Look for the SPEAKER on the bottom right side of your screen, right click on the speaker, go to open volume control. then a new window will popup and make sure you go to the OPTIONS tab, then ADVANCED OPTIONS, now make sure all the volumes are all the way up and not checked mute. Hope this helps..

Is it possible you just the Dvd's problem. There are times people would turn on subtitles, and the speech is turned off.
