First copyright your idea and a sketch that is detailed as possible.
Otherwise, take the original and have it and your signature notarized by a notary public. Then seal it in an envelope, after making 1 copy, and mail it to yourself by certified mail. Keep the certified envelope sealed and put it someplace safe. Then take a not so detailed sketch of the idea with a general idea of what materials you need and go to supply stores to buy the materials. Don't go into specifics with the clerks say it's for a sculpture or something. You can have lampshades created in some states at specialty shops but I'm not sure about where you live.

first don't get paranoid about it. The rest of the world is definitely not out to copy your lamp design. And if you are secretive about it, people won't be able to help you properly. In compensation you could be creative and inventive - but if you were would you have to ask this question?
There are enough hobby and hardware stores out there which will be more than happy to sell you stuff. Look in your local yellow pages for them.
If you want to make tiffany-style lamps look up those store on the internet. You'll probably need to learn a bunch of technical stuff before you have a chance of your design working.

Hobby Lobby or Micheals, at least those are two stores that are in my town. Good crafting stores.
