The Set for any show has to acomplish a couple of things first and most importantly (though some directors may disagree) it must fit in the space where the show is to be performed. This being said the shape, size, and equpiment level of the stage space will in part determine what is possible. Second, the set must meet the physical need outlined in the playwrigh'ts script. Some Playwrights are very specifc(which can become a problem if you deviate an they are still alive) other will give a general idea and let the Scenic designer and director have a free hand in the conceptualization phase of the design process. I have seen a few perfomances of Death of a salesman. One I saw a few years ago and the Set was laid out sothe the two bedroom were on the second floor: The boys bedroom was above the office on Stage Left. Both of these rooms had Scrim walls on the front of them allowing the content of those rooms to appear and vanish with the simple changing of a light cue. The kitchen was on the Lower level Upstage Right with the other bedroom above it and the living room was Down Stage center. If you read the stage direction you will also notice that a Small window is required on the downstare level near or in the door. that leads out to a garage. The Kitchen should also have a window over the sink. By the way if the theatre can accomodate it the set for this show traditionally does not have major moving pieces like on a turntable. The reason for having no major scene changes in that it breaks the dramatic tension the script is leading towards. I have seen Death of a Salesman done with turntables and other stage machinery in theatres that don't have the height to accomodate a second floor or don't have a very big stage, the important thing in this instance is to make the changes as time effiecient as possibly so you don't break the momentum for the audience.

As this is for an essay, and I am a person that graduted with a bachelor's of fine arts in theatre with the emphasis in my degree on design and technology ; let me give you a little insight into Scenery for Tennessee Williams show. The reason that there is so much stage direction at the very beginning of each of his plays is becuase those are the things in the show that are loaded with multiple layers of symbolism. If you pay attention to the things that he specifially lists and the condition he describes the item in while reading the play, it will give you greater insight into what Williams was trying to say. Sometime these items and setting are used for the purpose of veiled jokes or satire other times the very object being used give specific moments being portyed more depth and poignancy.

Well I think I gave you what you asked for and much more, I hope you get a good grade on you essay.

well you have to know that death of a salesman is a drama, a hell of a drama too, and just speaking of drama in the performing arts, or in this case, a play, the staging sets of the theme and mood of the entire play before it. however if you apply it to the actually play, the staging is very important since it shows how decrepit and bleak the times were for willy and salesman alike, since it was a dying time for them. also it allows for very unique stage techniques, particularly the usage of flashbacks. aside from a strictly literary analysis, whatever your doing with this piece, dont forget that this is a drama/tragedy that is meant to be perform, not just read hopes this helps a bit ruth

Oh crikey that's hard; it was on my theatre exam. Well, my idea was to have a revolving platform in the middle of the stage, with a wall and basic furniture. You can turn the platform during blackouts to change scene. The angular shapes can be projected onto a backdrop, probably using red lights and shadow. Lights in general are important...read the set directions really hard, and maybe look up the original set design.

Just for the record, "Death of a Salesman" is by Arthur Miller, not Tennessee Williams.

I saw a video of it in my drama class and I saw many changes in the set. I saw a kitchen, an office and even the 2 sons' bedroom.
