You never mentioned if you wanted to be better at the multiplayer, or better at the single-player, but here's a tip that will improve your game in both:
Use the HECK out of that pistol. Go for HEADSHOTS on everyone EXCEPT flood forms. That Halo 1 pistol is an instant death machine, and bullets from it can go all the way across the maps (even accurately hitting targets that are so far away your aiming reticle doesn't go red). Zoom-in with it to improve your aim.
Headshots are useless on flood forms because the parasites hide in their chest. On flood-forms, you wanna shoot them in the lower center of their chest. This won't always kill them, but it usually knocks them out with a single hit.
When facing a bunch of those popcorn flood types (the little tiny ones), if they're in a group, you want to target one of them that are in the middle of the group. That's because they pop with enough force to pop other ones that are nearby. You can clear a million of those things with like 3 well-placed pistol shots.
You can ignore 4 or 5 of them at a time as long as you still have your main shields working because they don't do much damage at all. Just be sure that you ALWAYS try to find time to stop and let your shields recharge.
For multiplayer, you need to really get to know your maps.. it's boring to just wander around them, but make-up stuff to do, and you'll be fine... Like, try and figure-out how to get out of the top of a level. Or try to see how fast you can get the rocket Launcher, or grab a weapon, and run to the next weapon and replace it, etc, etc.. just little things that get you running from weapon to weapon.
First day I got it, I spent some time grabbing weapons, and then trying to pick spots to shoot as I ran to the next weapon or objective area.
Get used to strafing and sliding sideways. Practise circle-strafing, where you run sideways, but keep turning your view to that you are always facing your target.. it'll cause you to run circles around them, making you harder to hit. Jump a lot too.. not only are you harder to hit, you're able to get to more places quicker.
Go to http://www.highimpacthalo.com and look at their tactics sections, and "ownage" movies. Sometimes winning is just a matter of knowing where you can get to, what weapons are there, and how quick you can get there.
There's also tips and hints floating around on there too.

Ben B is asolutely right. Unreal Tournament games are much better than Halo. When I got used to Unreal Tournament and then tried Halo, I was wondering why I was going so slow. Halo is too slow-paced.

Pick up Unreal Tournament 2004 for the pc. Its a better game anyway, and you have to be much quicker on your feet. It helps with your speed and teamwork. Perhaps after you play it you wont want to go back to Halo.

Its complicated to declare, in halo 3 its somewhat relaxing yet for my area i think of the ending sucked. I didnt like the boss in any respect, i think of there ought to have been something harder. and much less... stupid. it grew to become into somewhat consumer-friendly and the truck element on the tip grew to become into kinda weird and wonderful. It grew to become into complicated adequate, merely no longer probable what you like to end a activity with. I additionally expected the activity to be longer. yet over all it grew to become right into a quite good activity. Halo 2 grew to become into quite short and consumer-friendly to. yet i loved the boss sooo lots greater useful!! greater sword action. :D So identity ought to declare i loved halo 2 greater useful. yet halo a million grew to become into quite cool to little doubt. 3 grew to become into relaxing merely i think of they might have positioned greater paintings into it :D lol srry it somewhat is see you later. Thats my opinion :D
