In all honesty, I vastly recommend using a trackball instead of a mouse. A lot better control, no scrabbling all over the desk with it, fewer problems with sticking (ie - dust, etc clogging wheels), and usually much more precise. Takes a little getting used to from a mouse, but well worth it.

I use a LogiTech TrackMan, myself, which you can get almost anywhere for $25-$30. My last one went through four years of absolute hell before giving up the ghost (18-wheelers are notoriously bad on computer equipment).

For general functionality reliabilty and cost, plus ease of instalation maintenance etc i would suggest a basic 3 button (counting the wheel) optical scoll mouse. use it on a low reflective surface (normal mousemat) they never need cleaning , batteries, or any real maintenance to speak of. They come in a range of styles and the prices reflect that but they are simple and comfortable. and very easy to use.

I'd check bizrate.com for something like that. You can shop according to price there!
