I've taught college for a while now, and the first thing I can tell you is that your stress and worry are normal. Lots of freshmen will be feeling the same way.
For your particular concern about the dorm room, I suggest (1) thinking about it is an exciting opportunity to meet lots of cool new people, which hopefully will be the case, and (2) a decision that is not forever, should things not be perfect. That is, you're not making a lifetime commitment. If you realize you'd rather be somewhere else, you can request a change after a year. Or, if it's really bad and you need to move sooner, that can be done, too.
Good luck. I hope you end up having a terrific experience.

I think the distance from home might be causing some anxiety. Expect that you might need to visit home more often (if possible) in the first semester. I did, tho' it was only 35 miles away. If your school is very large, take some time to explore it with a map. It won't seem so large. (My school had over 25,000 kids).
Also, try to pick a dorm that's small, preferably with a "philosophy" you like (for instance, some dorms are quiet, for studying...other's are multicultural, others experimental and still others more traditional).
Try to imagine your classes, how much you'll learn (don't be afraid to approach the profs you like and befriend them...they can help immensely). Same goes for kids in your dorm. Even if your first roommate doesn't work out, try going out with her and socialize a bit, even just for dinner. You'll DEFINITELY meet other students and probably hit it off with at least a couple. My 2nd semester, I had a great roommate who became my best friend and introduced my to dozens of people.
Before you know it, you'll be invited to parties, movies, concerts and so on! Don't be afraid to experiment by socializing with people different from you...it's an amazing experience. You can get to know people from all over the country and the world, if you're in the right place. As long as you're careful about alcohol and other drugs, and guys you don't know, you should have a blast...I did!
I went from being so shy the first semester, the other students in my dorm called me "The Ghost" (they told me later!), to taking great courses, making tons of friends and having a great time...the BEST time of my life!
Your shyness and nervousness is normal...just don't let it get to you!

Relax. College is all about learning, understanding, exploring, and being mellow. Your first lesson, pick a decent room (you can adjust to anything though so don't worry too much) and if it turns out you don't like it you can file a request to change rooms when you are there.
Put it all in perspective. I guarantee you will look back on yourself and laugh when you think of how nervous you are getting now. What you have to understand is that it's not the end of the world. In fact it's the beginning of a much better one. The people there are not judgemental like highschool. College students think beyond the petty things. Now, get some sleep!

Going away to college is a stressful and exciting time. It is also a time to grow and become a mature adult. Maybe just focusing on the fact that this is the beginning of a great life adventure for you, with learning, growth and fun will help.
Take warm baths with lavender oil to calm you at night. Eat healthy so you won't get sick and stay physically strong. Walk, hike, bike daily to destress and stay fit. Stay away from caffiene and drink pure water instead. Warm milk before bed really does help you sleep too.
Ask yourself this, what am I so worried about? Is it anything valid? Or am I just letting my thoughts run wild? Control your thoughts by replacing negative ones with positive ones. Seek out a counselor at school if this continues.

>"i havent started it and its a paper for english 5 pages the minimum she wants a final draft due this wednesday" There you go, I can see you figured out the origin of your stress! You made choice at the time you got the assignment. I guess you can hope your instructor has amnesia and forgets it due! >"how can i lessen my stress so that i can work efficiently" Just start writing! And yes it will definitely look like you waited to the last minute! If you want any chance of getting a passing grade on it, I'd suggest you use the spell checker. I can always tell when student waits to the very last minute! Nothing exhausts my red pen like misspelled words and rotten grammar. Not to worry, they'll probably be offering this class next term!

Well, I mainly believe that you are excited not all that nervous, why because its like starting a new life with new surroundings. Not trying to scare you or anything, just be calm, and take everything bit by bit. Dont try to think of it, even though it must be hard. Actually think of it as being a good thing in life because you have a better oppurtunity as in meeting new friends. And they may also feel the same way you do, now you are able to share your feelings.
Hope I helped
