Hi there - I'm 28 years old... been reflecting lately on the joys of Christmas: the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and deeply meaningful warm Christmas carols (the ones about Jesus)...the ones that just make you feel so good inside. And now, perhaps for the first time, I feel more of the vibe that times have changed, there is more liberalism and more resistance to the true Christian theme of Christmas.... So I just wanted to ask: In your life experience, do you remember ever feeling this way at any point; perhaps at around my age (28) or another time (in other words, has it always been this way)? Or does it seem to you that society has indeed grown a lot worse in re: to Christian themes and it's because of that that now Christmas feels more under attack? Thanks, and Merry CHRISTmas! :)

It's okay if you're not over 50 (Just used that as a guideline to filter types of answers I thought I might get.) Just seeking a bit of wisdom from my elders. :)

Kameka, It's not close-mindedness, it's just an observation that if 80% of Americans claim to be Christians and since Christmas is a Christian holiday, then why does the small minority seem to think they have the right to eliminate Christian themes from Christmas?

I think it's your age. I'm 54 and I remember a time in my late 20's where I felt the same way. It seems the awe and wonder of Christmas kind of fade at your age - no disrespect intended, you are just more aware now, as you get older, that there are "Christians" and there are "Christians" and the two are not really alike. The true meaning of Christmas is still there, and you will find, that feelings of religious warmth in moving songs and traditions, and deep feelings of Christianity will always surround the Christmas season, but you will notice those things more than the glitter and lights. So have a Merry Christmas, enjoy your friends and family and don't worry, the true meaning of Christmas will never die.

I'm 59 years old and can remember for quite some time now that Christmas has been getting away from its true meaning, which is the birth of Jesus Christ. I wouldn't blame it on liberalism. Being liberal is not a curse. Maybe it's become more commercialized because not everyone believes in Jesus Christ.
I see people becoming so hateful during the Christmas holidays that it's disgusting. Stores make a big deal out of Black Friday. People get up so early just to rush to a crowded store in a crowded mall to buy gifts. If I'm going to buy things for my husband, I either buy them through a catalog or start shopping during the week in the early part of December.
The whole point is to honor Jesus and I fail to see how a person can do that when they're just about killing you for a parking space. Or getting into arguments in a store over something.
I don't always remember it as it has been for quite some time. When I was a child, we got gifts but we knew it was Jesus' birthday.
I hope what I'm saying makes sense.

I think that about that time in my life it struck me, the fact that stores couldn't WAIT to start the Christmas selling season. My first child was a 1 1/2 and I was trying to impress the REASON for the season. As the years go on, it is truely sad to see Happy Holidays written more than Merry Christmas! I'm sorry, I don't put up a holiday tree, I put up a CHRISTmas tree!! I do have santas around, read "The Night Before Christmas" to small visitors at that time, BUT, I also ALWAYS have my Nativity set prominately
displayed! Maybe, SOME day, things will turn around.
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Hello. Yes, Christmas as it was meant to be celebrated has disapeared completely from American Society. Children are spoiled, and many many adults are stressed and depressed over the Christmas holidays because of gift giving and meal planning. And that is completely ridiculous because Jesus Christ is the reason we celebrate Christmas (even though He most likely wasn't born in the winter). People can't even say Merry Christmas anymore, yet Christmas trees appear in stores before Halloween. It is absurd and ridiculous, and the only way to remedy it is to teach children the real meaning of Christmas.

A tasteful dated Christmas ornament is always a thoughtful gift. If you could find out some of her interests you could get her an ornament that suits her hobbies or interests. If that isn't possible just buy the prettiest one you can find in the price range. This year I purchased a Knit wit ornament for a friend who likes to knit, a yellow lab ornament for the owner of 2 labs, a cowboy ornament for the rodeo lover etc. I too am a 50 + female with many hobbies and interests and in my opinion you can never have too many Christmas ornaments. Every ornament has its own story and if you are lucky enough to pick the right one she will think of you every year at Christmas when she decorates her tree.

You aren't imagining it. Things have all happened together around
the same time. I grew up in the 50's and 60's. Happier times. More values, loyalties and industry. Then in the 70's the economy
took a turn for the worse. Companies went out of business. Prayer was taken out of classrooms. The Atheistic government was slowly pushing religion and God out of everything. Now religious people are considered the enemy of society. The trouble makers. Christmas has become Xmas to make room for $$$$$$$$$$$. Even the poor don't stick together. They sell one another out to minimum wage employers for mor job security
which is a joke since a minimum wage job with no union leaves you to the employer's mercy. When you slow down you're gone.
Labour boards who are supposed to protect workers see it the employer's way. Progress?? WE're going back to the 1800's as far as the working poor is concerned.
Christmas is a merchant's gimmick to bring in the money..
They play all that nice music to get the immotions high and part you with money you can't aford to spend. Chistmas plays are getting fewer and fewer. The next day everything is torn down and thrown out. No more money to be made.

It seems this way to me. I'm not over 50, but my grandmother is here and I just asked her (She's 60) and she said she thinks so too. The true meaning of Christmas is often just understated and the kids nowadays dont even KNOW what Christmas is all about. They just want the ipods, videogames, etc. How sad. As a nondenominational Christan male in his 20's... I think people should feel a little more than they do when they hear this sort of song.

Don't let liberals make you feel ashamed of Christmas. There is an attack on Christmas. Did you know that in school it is not call Christmas break anymore? It's called a winter break. And the Christmas party that you have the last day of school is now called the winter party. Sickening, isn't it?

"But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, without natural affection, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; holding to a form of godliness, although they have rejected its power; Have nothing to do with them" (II Timothy 3:1-5). Now I ask you, doesn't that sound like the 6 o'clock news followed by Entertainment Tonight?
Yes, the World is spiraling downward and out of control. "for behold, darkness will cover the Earth, and deep darkness the peoples; but the Lord will rise upon you, and His glory will appear upon you. And a Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob, declares the LORD "(Isaiah 60:2; 59:20) Jesus said it would be as in the days before the Flood and as in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:22-37). "But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your head, because you redemption is drawing near" (Luke 21:28)

I'm 48 is that OK? Yeah I still feel that Christmas has been stolen away. It used to be a time of wonder and had a magic feeling of the Glory of God to it.
