You know, the bird feeders with the huge pine comes that are slatherd with peanut butter and then rolled in bird seed. I want to make something like that but I don't have any of those big pine cones and was wondering if there is something else I can use??!! THANKS A BUNCH!

I have looked around town at stores and the only ones they have are all treated or have stuff on them that I am sure woulnd't be safe for birdies! So buying them is NOT an option and I don't have an relaticks in Georgia!

I take a spatula of peanut butter and slap it on a tree trunk. Then press bird seed to the pb. It seems to really attract the red bellied woodpeckers and cardinals. The fact is you can put pb on most anything and cover in seed the birds will love it.

You can use almost anything. My daughter and I made one from a piece of toast and put peanut butter and bird seed on it and hung it with wire from a tree branch, but you could just throw it into the yard too. If you do though, the squirrels may find it first! We also used a wooden heart that was also hung with wire, with the peanut butter and bird seed all over it. The birds loved it. Of course, you could use any piece of wood, no matter what the shape is. The birds won't care, they just see food! Just remember to bring it in when it rains, unless you want to make a new one. The rain will, after a while, ruin the wood. Oh, and be sure NOT to use painted or pressure treated wood as this would cause harm to the birds. Even a round thick dowel would work. Just drill holes about 3 inches apart and fill holes with small dowel rods that are about 21/2 inches long. The small dowels will provide a place for the bird to perch, this would be ideal. Good luck and have fun bird watching, it is a real joy!!!!

Remember that if you use peanut butter you must mix it with some sand or some kind of grit, bits of small rock or corn meal. Birds need this to digest the peanut butter.
Birds don't have teeth to chew their food, instead their powerful gizzard grinds seeds, nuts, and berries. But they need grit to help them with digestion. You can supply it by putting out packaged canary grit, finely ground egg shells, very fine gravel, or clean sand.
Peanut butter warning. Many books list peanut butter as an appropriate food for birds. However, because it is so sticky they can choke on it. If you use it (and we do not recommend it), mix it half and half with wheat germ or melted beef fat. Too much peanut butter can also cause health problems for birds.

Michaels sells bags of pinecones (for like $3.00) that are untreated and should do the trick. Good Luck
