The Bar Association in your area has pro bono legal help. Usually these are new lawyers just getting started or those in retirement. Call. They are listed in the phone book.

I was told by someone close to me that if I couldn't afford a family lawyer to file custody of my kids, that I could request the kids' father pay for it and he most likely would have to. I don't know if it is true or not, but is something to look into.

go to a non-for-profit social service agency that will assist you. if you are female and escaping an abusive situation or are/soon to be homeless you qualify for many programs and services. do you have a local child welfare office that will explain your rights and advocate on your behalf?
