I have a small handfull of beautiful small and tiny coloured shells I collected from the beach last weekend. Should I keep them in jar, should I keep them in water, should I sterilise or treat them in any way?

13years ago we went to the beach and even collected a starfish just rinse them in a drainer and the let them dry by theirself and then set them in a basket or you can glue them to mirrors, paper or a jar should be fine you could probably put them back in a little sand in the jar.

If any of them are conch type shells, it's possible there's still a skeleton inside. And it will cause an odor.

Definitely wash them, air dry them and then "paint" them with ModPodge. It will seal up the holes.

If you have any tiny enough, they look cute arranged on a wooden picture frame. The medium size ones can be made into magnets, with the disk type magnet available at Michaels, WalMart.,etc...

I prefer to sterilize them.

I just boil them for a few minutes with a few drops of bleach. Air dry.

Also there is no possibility of them developing an unpleasant odor this way.

All you have to do is wash them and let them air dry and they will be fine. If you let them sit out wash them whenever they are dusty. I had a nice collection when I was a kid. They will last years.
