The jacket my mother in law sent is a size 24 months, but he's a size 18. So, I'm hoping there's a way I can shrink it enough so it will fit him. It's really cute, and I'd hate for him to not be able to wear it. By the time he fits 24 months it will probably be too warm outside for a jacket. Any ideas?

It's 80%cotton
20% polyester

It also says the lining and trim is 100% cotton

So, would it be a waste of time to even try to shrink it?

You can try washing and drying it on hot/high. You are risking some materials shrinking and others not. Good luck!

I work in the apparel industry and that fiber content isnt going to shrink and if the lining is 100% cotton that will be the only part of the jacket that will shrink

There is a plumbers solution of polymers similar to
coatings of varnish. To activate this complex you add
1 cup of ammonia per gallon, do this by hand. When the
soapwater heats up to boiling in a separate pot, (detergents)
pour over floating article in previous wash water, and add
one cup of onion salt. This will have a wiff of onion now and
then but it is an old technique and will shrink it to the size
that you do handle it. Keep a sweatshirt nearby to compare
sizes. It will only work once so work it for 15 minutes.

dry it all the way for several times. if all else fails, feed your child a lot and maybe you can make him grow enough to fit into the jacket.
