My Dell inspiron 1150 laptop's hinges are both cracked. One side is really bad, it cracked right off. I the other side is cracked and I'm afraid that the stress of doing all the work is going to break that one off too. Is it possible to fix this myself? Or if I bring it to a repair shop is it expensive. I hope I can use my laptop long enough to read your answers. Thanks!! Jesse

Update for people with similar problem. I found out the parts I need are the back case and the front bezel. I called Dell and ordered these parts for $37.70 (with tax and shipping). I also called a local repair shop and they told me they could put these on for me for $15-$20 dollars. YAY!

G'day,

Unfortunately because it is a laptop, that has to be done by DELL's authorised repair centre (not just any other repair shop) and will cost you quite alot. A desktop hardware problems can be done by yourself or just any other computer repair shop.

What I would suggest is as follows:
1. Call Dell, describe the problem and ask for a quote or an estimate on repair cost (inc. labor)
2. Check the price of a new laptop with the options that suitable for your use.
3. Compare the cost. If your current laptop is about 2-3 years old, it may be worth fixing. However considering the comments that I've read about your laptop model (follow the links below), I think it may be just the tip of the iceberg.

Hope this helps you in making a decision. Good luck.

Yes it is possible to fix this issue yourself, but may not be worth your time and laptop if you are not experienced in changing parts on a laptop. Most likely you will need to find a new laptop case, you may be able to find one from ebay. Look for one that something on the laptop is not functioning correctlyl, IE: the lcd screen.

Now if you do find one remember that you will need to be pulling apart the whole laptop most likely. You will need to remove the motherboard, lcd screen, hard drive, ECT. So it will NOT be an easy job.

I would suggest you take it to a certified shop, it may be kind of expensive though. To save some money try to find a broken laptop that is physically in good condition as stated above. Then take them to a laptop repair company.

I would check prices for all first though, remember that you can purchase pretty good and new laptops for around $500-$600 dollars now. So check it out first. Hope this helps..
