HP all the way. A lot of people like Dell because you can personalize your laptop. But, people don't know that you can do the same thing on HP.com.
HP is currently the best selling computer and comes with cooler features than you would get with a Dell, like LightScribe. The HP laptop itself is a very nice looking machine. Dells are just...Dell.
Also, you'll find that you can buy a HP cheaper at a Best Buy or somewhere than you could order a Dell online. Dell customer service is horrible.

IBM and Toshiba make the best laptops, followed by HP and Dell. You might consider deciding what your needs and budget are and compare similar HP and Dell laptops and maybe an IBM.
Dell has a reputation these days for mediocre support and has pledged to spend many millions to improve. Only time will tell.
Once you have decided what is most important ... size, battery life, weight, processing power then figure out what applications you will run. If word process, e-mail, chat and browsing the web then all new laptops will run these type applications fine and your communications link becomes more important. If you are a gamer or power user then the CPU, amount of RAM and a specialized graphics chip become important.
If you are cost conscious and don't use the laptop all that often, you might consider refurbished.

I have a dell laptop that has worked well for the last 4 years. Still works and still is fast. In general, it is about preference. Some people like dell, some like HP, some like something else. I personally think the dell is the best bang for the buck. Use a coupon and you can get a great deal.
Here are some great dell coupons: http://www.24houredeals.com/dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Why a Mac of course! : ) Then an HP then Toshiba, and somewhere near the bottom is Dell. I know of people who had a Dell and were not satisfied with the life of the product.

Hi there, before I answer your good question let me just provide you with what these two companies are doing for customers like us. First HP, they have poor quality control for their OEM components like hard drives, optical drives, etc. They do not detect batch problem during assembly only after customer complaints and believe me the line is long. According to one Optical drive supplier (I won't mention who). They are so pissed off with DELL because they reject 40 to 45% of their deliveries to Dell assembly plant in Penang, Malaysia due to errors and quality control. But they love HP because they accept everything Dell rejects. Ha-ha-ha. Who do you think will get these lemons. For me Dell is superior to HP. Plus the internal company problems with HP has not been solve and they have a lot. It's global. Good luck.

Dell. They have way better customer service and have call centers and warehouses all over NA.
HP is a jack of all trades company, from printers to cameras to computers.. they don't have 1 specific area of expertise.
Go with Dell.. They are way more customizable than HP laptops too.

HP.
I worked at Fry's Electronics in Customer Relations, and when I had to call manufacturers, HP always had good customer service. Dell was a little tricky.
