Covered landing/front stoop is good to prevent sun 'over-exposure.' Verandas on the front of a house are good for providing extra shade while giving a nice aestethic feature.

If you have a colored door (painted) the sun can bleach out the color so having some coverage will delay that somewhat. If you have glass in your door - then you'll need to decide what level of privacy you want (opaque glass or clear, decorative etchings you can't see through or plain glass with grills perhaps, etc.)

Depending on the part of the country that you live in - you may want to consider a locking screen door in front of the main door - for ventilation if it gets too hot in summer (maybe create a cross-draft with a window in the house.) Or - there are front doors that have a built-in opening windows within them; some have built-in blinds also. It all depends on the "look" and function you're going for.

start with the outside, a roof over the doorway is a must. Not for rain, although it will help, but for the sun. Facing west will heat up your entry all summer long.
