Steady Eddie is partially correct. The Conn Smythe does not have to go to a player on the cup winning team. But it has never been given to a player not playing in the final.
In 2003 JS Giguere was the first player from the losing team to receive the Conn Smythe since Ron Hextall in 1987. And in fact it has only been given to a losing team's player 5 times.
They do base their decision on the entire playoff run but if you are not playing in the final you're not going to get the Conn Smythe

The award named the Conn Smythe Trophy .it is awarded to the best player in the entire postseason. It does not always go to the Cup winner or have to be a team playing in the finals.

Whole playoffs amd it doesn't have to be from the Cup winner. Take 2002-2003. New Jersey won the Cup and Anaheim goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere won the Conn Smythe.

Post season but I think it has always gone to someone one 1 of the 2 teams playing in the finals.

It is the Conn Smythe, and it goes to the MVP for the playoffs, not just the finals.
