It isn't just pre-teens who are getting more rude; it's society in general, including parents, so they reflect what they see. As for that age group; they are apt to be VERY rebellious and wanting to test limits, "find" their identity and be socially accepted.

Yet, ironically, they can feel frightened of "letting go" of their parents' guidance and sometimes retreat into "babyish" behavior. I believe that their emotional outbursts are often just fear masked by anger; they are confused but don't want to seem weak. This is the age when one minute, they're telling the parents to go to hell or wishing they'd die and the next, clinging to them and wanting all kinds of attention and help.

I lucked out, as my kid's transition was fairly easy (his personality is VERY laid-back), but keeping yourself open and as non-judgmental as possible, while providing strict (yet reasonable) guidance, is essential to both the child's AND the parent's well-being.

Their roll modles in their lives are on tv and movies and video games. THey are watching more shows and movies not intended for their age group. They want to be "cool" so they pick someone who is a celeb and try to act like them.

Lazy/ignorant parents are not teaching youth propper social behaviors and good morals and values. They do not spend enough time explaining the difference between video gaming/movies and the real world
