When I was young I would wait until I was in that state where you're kinda half awake/half asleep (you know what's going on, but you're on your way out) and then focus on what I want to dream about. Used to work, don't know about know

I cannot control or make what I want to dream about before I go to sleep but while I'm asleep and a dream is thrown my way, I can control what happens. This however takes practise. To be honest I never knew that 'dream controlling' had a name for it and how hard it could be to accomplish dream control. It was just something you never really talked about when your a kid growing up. "Hey I controlled my dream last night!" Sounds funny huh? lol. It's called Lucid Dreaming. The best advice I can give is that if you are dreaming and you actually know your dreaming thats when you can start to 'add' or 'change' things in your dream. Little by little though. Like, say your dreaming that your at the beach, try and look at your whole surroundings, there you are starting to take control of your dream, or look at your hand and think I want a stone. See how that 'stone' appears to you. It takes practise. I started 'control dreaming' as a kid because I kept having the same nightmare over and over again. Getting chased by something. I was too scared to turn around to see what was chasing me. Until one 'night dream' lol I finally had the courage to turn around to see that a purple dinosaur was chasing me and it started to shrink. Thats when I started my 'dream control'. Was sick of nightmares! lol

It depends. I don't know how to control what you dream about but you can have control to an extent. You are aware of your environment even when sleep and things around you get incorperated into your subconscientious. If you sleep with the TV or radio on what you hear can get included. So if you are having nightmares go to sleep watching Disney or Cartoon Network. Or play music just make sure its something light.
Also if you make an effort to remember its just a dream and even say so in your dream you usually can direct where your dream is going.
