High School Football
To hear the roaring of the crowd, to smell the wet dirt and grass on the field, to feel the awesome power of thousands of eyes upon you, to feel the electricity of anticipation, to hear and feel the crack of two bodies colliding…shouldn’t be limited to one sex.

High school football has been an American tradition since 1920, and has been steadily gaining popularity. Since the beginning it has also been a tradition that only males could play the highly aggressive game. But now, in vastly changed times, the line between men’s and women’s sports is growing thin.

In 1926, women’s football was formed. Sure, it was just a form of halftime entertainment, but from there the seeds of the NWFL were planted. Since then, American women have been coming together to play this rough, aggressive sport once thought to be only appropriate for men – and high school football is no different.

With the new era of sexual equality, men and women have been blurring the gender lines (in more ways than one), and the exclusivity of high school sports has been blurred with them. There have been many accounts of girls trying out and making the high school football team. Some are actually very good. There are some states, like California, where it is against the law to prohibit girls from playing on a high school football team if there isn’t an exclusively female team.

Encina High School, in Sacramento, California, is a high school that is known for having female football players, and they weren’t kickers either! So, now that the world has turned into a giant “gender blender”, why shouldn’t amateur sports follow suit? If they can keep up, and be a productive part of the team why keep girls from playing?

High school football is a tradition, but it shouldn’t be a biased one.

Yes, a girl should be able to play varsity football. If they told you "no" because you are a girl, call your local news station and make a big stink about it. The humiliating publicity should at least get you a tryout, it not on the team. Keep in mind that if you are on the team, the media stunt will probably cause the other players to treat you differently.

When I went to high school, our football teams kicker was female. They actually recruited her from the soccer team because she was so good. Go for it. Don't let them discriminate against you just because you are female.

Do you really want to play or make a name for your self? Unfortunately multi-sex sports are far and few between. Allot of things need to be taken into consideration. Dressing rooms, intensity of play, and your over all toughness. Can you stop a charging 250 pound person coming after your quarter back, or take one to the ground. There are allot of bruises in this sport. Granted it is an experience you will never forget but at what price are you willing to pay. There is a lot of additional cost "some one" will have to pick up for it to happen. Just about the same as my boy friend wanting to play volley ball with the girls. For some reason they wouldn't let them shower together.

have you ever played football before? i mean real tackle football? you don't just go out on the field and be good at it,it does take practice. yes girls have all the capabilities as guys, and yes no one gender is superior to the other, but you better take a look at some things. football is a very tough contact sport, not everyone is cut out for it,even some big strong guys cant handle football. we are not talking about just proving that girls are as good as boys,we are talking hard hitting, fast paced football, and believe me you will have to be able to take a hit. on the other side you will also have to be able to deliver a hit, these guys are not going to fall just because you decide to hit them, you better be able to bring them down. are you fast? you need speed to play football, unless you play on the line in which case you need to be very strong and able to stop someone from crossing the line, can you do that? i don't know what the guys at your school are like, but you say you are skinny? i'm guessing most of the football team is not skinny people, and even if they are most of the teams you play against likely will not be. also what can you bring to the team? i mean football requires skill and athletic ability, even if you join the team there is no guarantee you will even get to play. i would suggest you really think about it. yes men and women are equal, but you are talking about a contact sport where if the football team is anything at all,all the guys are going to be,strong, quick and most likely out weigh you by anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds, maybe even more. can you take a hit from a 180 pound guy,or can you bring down a 180 pound guy?

Yes, everyone should have the opportunity. On what grounds were they stopping you ? Simply a gender thing ? I think that's wrong. But that does open up another question. Since a lot of high schools don't offer volleyball for the boys, should they get a chance on the girls team ? Is there a difference ?

No. You shouldn't be allowed to play because football is a man's game and women should never be allowed out of the kitchen.

When my daughter was in High School, her coach told her to take it easy on the other girls when they played flag football otherwise her coach was going to put her on the boy’s football team.
She liked to tackle.
After watching the boys play, she decided it was in her best interest not to tackle the girls.

No, and do not sue. Boys High School Football is Boys High School football. If you want to play football, petition the school to add a girls football program.
