Typicaly, I'll spend 10-15 minutes writing a detailed response to the question only to have the asker (who is asking because they don't know) pick the best answer from an equally uninformed person who has an easier and cheaper urban legand answer. Why bother? I only answered to help and it's frustrating! I want to yell "No-oooooooo, don't do that!

I'm a paramedic, and it bothers me to no end when people answer a question that they don't know anything about. I'll write up a detailed answer, and then the best answer goes to someone who wrote a two sentence response that isn't even medically accurate.
I just hope they have enough common sense not to actually follow the bad advice :)

I don't ever say my credentials when I give my answers and so therefore I don't spend a lot of time on them. I think sometimes I give better answers that way. I am a mental health professional with over 20 years in the field and I have a Masters Degree in Social Services with a sub-specialty in Clinical Social Work with Individuals, Families and Groups. I feel like I have seen it all. I think it's refreshing to just answer questions from my "gut" without getting into the where's and why-fors of it all. People either take it or leave it and there are no strings attached.

Hi John, I feel your pain. I joined a forum that discusses nothing but what I do for a living. I can guarantee there's sites with construction forums. The site I'm at, people who don't know what they're doing ask us pros questions. It's fun answering them because they appreciate the help. I know what you mean though, I see the most ridiculous answers being chosen as best. You just have to ignore those and move on. They'll just have to learn the hard way.

I agree, it is frustrating. I think a lot of people on here ask questions not because they want an actual correct answer, but because they want confirmation that their belief is correct. The dumber the question, the more people seem to support ridiculous answers.

sometimes i think the correct answer....although correct....isnt as appealing to the other answers.....
i know i have given correct information on previous questions and someone else has been given best answer and i know for a fact that they are wrong.....
at the end of the day as long as the advice you are giving is correct no one can come back to you with any problems.....ultimately the asker gets to choose the answer that they want regardless as to whether it is right or not

You are going into too much information. Shorten your
responses and make them clearer, if possible. Most
people aren't willing to read a lot of information so they
choose an answer that is shorter and clearer to under-
stand. Even if that answer is so WRONG.

YES! When I answer military related questions I try to help people and use personal experience stories to help, but then they just choose whoever had the shortest answer or whoever gave and answer that made them happy, reguardless of if it was true or not

Many of the answers they are accepting are just confirming their preconceptions, which is all they wanted anyway.
