A private investigator is someone (usually an ex cop, or someone who takes a course in investigating) who is paid by a private citizen, corporation, or other organization to investigate something. It can be a spouse who is worried about cheating, a adult who wants to find his birthparents, an employer concerned about stealing, etc, etc, etc. They also can do some background checks (some do background checks for goverment or businesses) can do fingerprinting, etc.
Am I close?

Private investigators are people that are hired to assist attorneys, businesses and the public with a variety of legal, financial and personal problems. Most PI's are trained to perform physical surveillance, which you would often have to do for long periods of time. PI's also perform computer database searches which allows them to quickly obtain a very large amount of information. They question suspects, catch people doing things they shouldn't be and file complaints about suspects with the police. In the end they sometimes have to testify in court.
Also most PI's have to be licensed by the local authorities or the state depending on where you live.

Someone who you hire if you think your spouse is cheating on you (ie take photos, give reports, details etc which could be used for any for any ensuing divorce case depending on the results)
Alternatively for parents who want to see what your teenage kids are up to & concerned they may be falling in with the wrong crowd.
Worst case scenario, if you were accused of a crime you didn't commit or were unfortunate enough to be a relative of a victim of crime & felt the police/law enforcement agency were being biased against you or in the case of a third party not taking the case seriously or being ineffective.
Overall I think hiring a PI in real life is a luxury that only reasonably wealthy people can afford due to the time factor involved, nevermind the additional expenses involved.
I would assume you have access to info that ordinary people don't have ie licence plate nos etc but please note this opinion is derived mainly from the many fiction novels I have read. I am lucky enough so far in life that I have never felt the need to hire one ..... but you asked & this is an honest answer so hope it helps.....

We have all seen 'Cheaters' on TV - I guess you are hired to watch people and collect evidence of their activites, record them and their conversations. Maybe this is all a bit 007 but do you bug telephones? Do you work for the government, or any private person? I guess I am not really sure!
Good luck with your project
