Either you have an upside down catfish but if he looks like a normal catfish and never used to do so, I'm afraid to tell you that he is dying. Once I had one doing the same thing and after a few weeks he died. I tried every mean to help him even looked for a disease, quarantined him and from time to time I adjusted the temperature because the guy at the petstore told me so but all was in vain.
Hope he gets well and good luck with him

i have a ton of catfish and they are pretty mellow and do the same thing. they do go nuts occasionally, they jump out of the water and bang themselves on the hood (light), about once a day to let me know they are hungry around 6pm...silly bastards they are. I've had an aquarium for the last three years with no problems. catfish are mellow.

you might have a "upside down catfish" as their called which continually do that which is considered a novelty fish for your tank but their a certain species. not just any random catfish

No this is not normal. To me it sounds like your fish has an air bladder problem. He may live for a long time like this or he may not. There is no cure for it. Just let him be and let life take its course.

sounds likea weird fish to me and as long as he is eating and swimming he's alright. what i actually think is he is trying to fake u out and get u to throw him back in the lake, river or canal u got him out of so he can live a long happy life out of a small tank that will never let him grow to his best potential.

Sounds like your catfish is dying. He could be sick.
Remove him to his own little bowl and watch him. If he is
sick he'll probably infect your other fish.

Resting after spurts of using his energy? That's my best guess.
