i just got a 1968 camaro, but the top is rusted it has hoes in some parts of the top.. mosrtly on the sides. they told me that i might have to get a new top. is that true... how would i do about doing this and from what car should i get it from?

sand it down...get to the holes and pits. then if you have access to lead body bars that is the best way to repair it. If not...then ugggg...bondo. you can also get some sheet metal and cut the bad parts out and weld the new stuff in. since it's a classic I'd suggest have a reputable body shop do the work. It will cost you but it will be well worth it.

Elmo has it about right, unless the WHOLE roof is rusting off, which it could be if it had a vinyl top on it, your best and cheapest bet would be to just grind out the rust holes and replace with sheet metal. A full roof would be very complicated, time consuming, and expensive. A roof from a 67-69 camaro or firebird will work, also we used an old 4 door nova for some sheet metal parts, most of the curves of the metal were the same.

if you have good air tools (not cheapo's), this is an easy repair.
if you don't have the tools, don't try.
remove the head liner and insulation.
everywhere there is rust take a putty knife and open the rusted area up as far as it is easy.
if you can't get the knife thru the metal DON'T force it.
after you have the easy rust off use a wire brush or die grinder to round out the edges.

cut a replacement piece of metal to cover the hole, then set it aside.
sand out to bare metal and area a little larger than the replacement metal size.
mig or tig weld the "cover" in place.
get some acid from the auto paint store, wash the bare metal, dry it IMMEDIATELY after rinsing and spray a good epoxy primer over the area.
then repeat as needed.
sand off the primer on the first patch.
after all patches are in place, use a 4" or wider bondo spreader and spread the first layer of bondo around all edges of the first patch.
after drying use a da to sand and feather all edges.
now the skill comes in.
you have an obvious patch. using wider spreaders you have to feather out the patches until they're blended in. i use a freight train to do this because da's cause ripples and waves.
reprime.
sand the entire area with successfully finer papers until you have used at least 600 grit.
put your color on.

The best way to fix this right is to find another top' Cut yours off and weld on another. In the long run it will be less work and a better repair require less bondo. You didn't say where you are at' You can find another top at Goodmark Industries in Lawrenceville Ga. Try www.goodmarkindustries.com They have all kinds of restoration parts for GM. You can also try Arizona Classics's. Sorry i don't have a address. Hope this helps. P.S. As far as i know a 68-69 Firebird has the same top. Good luck.

You'll have to find a junker with a decent top (no easy task), cut it off, cut yours off & weld the new one on & grind down the welds & paint. You'd have to find the same model (any other 68 camaro hard top).

There is only one way to fix rust properly, cut it out & weld new metal in.
