if her bf "did something" security-wise, then that means he probably password protected the router so the neighbors can't freeload off her wireless. You have to find a way to get to the router settings. You probably need the manual in order to find the right access address to input in IE so that you can get into router settings. Once you find that out, you can input the same settings into your wireless card and off you go.

He may have change the wireless encryption key.

Go to the website of the company that made the router. Hopefully, there will be instructions on how to reset the router to it's factory defaults. If you can do this, then you may lose the wireless connection to the desktop. Go through Control Panel and change the properties of the wireless connection to not use encryption.

Once everything works again, set a good password for the network on both the desktop & your laptop.

BTW, If she's your sister-in-law and has a boyfriend.......

He could have done a few things to the router. If you do an ipconfig in a cmd window. It should be something similar to 192.168.1.x, with x being the ip of the pc you are on. You put the gateway IP of the box, that will probably be 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. If her BF did not change the password to the router you can log in as admin as the user name and admin as the password. If he did, you will have to call the wireless company and they will be able to tell you how to reset it.
