Some ink cartridges have electronics that keep track of the number of times you printed so that it can guess when it is running out of ink -- it does not measure the ink level directly, except for the 'empty' status. When you refill, you add the ink, but that page-printed counter does not get reset.
I tried using refilled inks before, but in the end I gave up and just bought the original inks. You get such bad quality prints (especially photos!) when you're using the unbranded inks that it looks like you're using a cheaper or lower quality printer than what you originally bought.
I think for inks, it's not just about color, but the whole chemistry of the inks. The printer hardware must be calibrated to the specific properties of the ink you put in so that you can get great prints all the time.
Goodluck.

I would never get my ink cartridge's refilled, as I've heard too many woeful stories about them. I have a lexmark printer and there ink cartridge's are on the whole more expensive than any other make. My motto is buy new, don't refill.

I would go to cartridge world to get refills and it isn't always a success. You may just have to buy new cartridges.
