I'm straight myself, but almost every gay person I've ever known has said that they knew they were gay from a very early age. You can try and repress it all you like-- some people have done so succesfully, after all-- but you can't "ungay" yourself through force of will.
Frankly, I'd think denying your true nature would be more harmful to you in the long run. Being gay can be difficult depending on where you live, your family, your friends, etc. but at the end of the day it's YOUR life and you're the only one who can live it. Learn to love who you are and believe in what you can accomplish regardless of the obstacles in your path. I'm sure paraplegics wish they could "be normal" and walk again, but all the wishing in the world can't change the cards life has dealt you.
That's the only advice I can give for a situation like that; don't feel guilty about your nature-- above all things, be happy.

Brainwashing.
You say think like a gay, I'm just going to assume you don't mean overly feminine which would be stereotyping and wrong, and instead assume you mean attracted tot he same sex. I'd advise accepting homosexuality and finding some nice friend or significant other to share the burden with them. Intolerance will always exist, but no one said that you can't overcome it and live a relatively normal life. At least not anyone worth listening to.
I'm not trying to be politically correct, in fact I've always tried my best to fight against it. However I would suspect that not really anyone else is either, most people here probably are either bi or homosexual and aren't so much trying to be PC as they are sympathizing with the situation presented in the question.

Gay IS normal but I guess the person could go back into the closet and live an unhappy half life.

He already is a normal man. Drop the mythology and accept reality. Just be gay. It's better in the long run anyway.

What, precisely, is the difference between how a gay man thinks and how a straight man thinks? They are still both men, the only difference is at whom they make their passes.

Absolutely. Dont pay any attention to the PC crowd here that wants to define degenarcy away. Its natural for all living things to seek to reproduce, and for humans, the process of nature itself tells us that love between a man and a woman is normal for every man.
The first thing you need to realize is that while you might not be responsible for ahving a certain tendency, you become responsible if you surrender to it. It appears you have chosen not to
Accentuate the positive.I suspect you have some attraction to women, and you need to build on that and put them at the center of your life. They are the sweetest reward for a man, and you are depriving yourself of the best thing in life if you take the advice of the PC crowd
Human beings are not perfect, and come with all sorts of mental disorders. ALL of us have at least a few to some degree. They only become a moral issue when we give into them
There are still psychiatrists who practice conversion therapy and have gotten good results. If you are religios, you should speak to a clergyman that believes iin natural law based religion rather than liberal relativist versions of your creed
