A person I know talks to himself. It's not angry or violent words, just like he's acting out a dialogue scene from a movie or learning lines or something. He just talks. Any idea what this means - when someone just talks to themselves?

he does ask/answer his own questions, like he's two (or more) people having a conversation.

Talking to yourself is natural. Some do it out loud some just have an inner dialog. Its not an issue unless he is having a two person conversation with himself. He is asking and answering his own question as if it was a different personality. As long as he doesn't argue with himself or answer in a different voice he is fine. If he does.....hide the kitchen knives he might be having a schizophrenic break.

i agree, that sounds more like thinking aloud. i definately do it all the time. actually, today at the office, a co-worker was with a client and when the client left, she told me that i had been talking to myself a great deal the whole time the client was there. i even asked her if she was sure that i wasn't on the phone........that is how unaware most people are of the occurrence of this behavior when they are the ones doing the talking!

i've always heard and maintained that it is ok to talk to yourself, answer yourself, and even argue with yourself to a certain extent. but if you start interrupting yourself, you have a problem.

it means they have too many thoughts to keep in their head. Nothing wrong with talking a dialogue with yourself it is actually a useful tool for working through things.

I work with mental patients all the time. Talking to yourself all the time is not normal. Trust me on this. I've seen people who do talk to themselves and function just fine. But they don't think anything is wrong with them.

I do it all the time but I refer to it as thinking out loud. It's actually pretty normal for people to do.
