I'm a beginner, but would like something that would last and would be a good bass when I'm more advanced.

By the one you can afford. Even the most expensive and fancy bass guitar in the world won't make you sound any better than you are, so buy a cheap one and spend the extra time you don't have to work to pay for it practicing! The whole "branding" thing with guitars is a complete and utter scam. Do you think Flea or Les Claypool would sound any less awesome if they were playing guitars that cost $40 from Woolworth's? Of course not!

Good luck... don't waste your money.

P.S. Bass is an excellent skill, there are ALWAYS bands looking for a bass player. Don't try to play like anyone else, though, play like YOU...

My advice would be to buy something good enough to play decently, but not so expensive that if you decide bass is not for you, your left with a very expensive clothes hanger. ;-)

$300 (including case) is about the right amount, IMHO. And don't forget straps, cords and an amp! I hesitate to recommend a manufacturer 'cause there's so many decent ones out there. My suggestion would be to ask a musician friend to help you evaluate basses. Take him/her to the music store and play as many in that price range as you can. Your friend can tell you which has a better action, tone, etc... Don't take the advice of a store salesman as they may steer you to something you don't want or need.

In the absence of a musician friend, ask a customer for help. Most musicians are more than willing to help you evaluate something. I've done this for prospective customers and it's worked out well.

Good luck!

good quality musical instruments aint cheap but if you're serious then its definately worth the money to get something more on the high-end side. Washburn, Fender, and Ibanez all make good stuff but watch out as each brand name has high quality and generic type instruments.
